Getting Started
Rather than viewing the essay as a single task, break it down into smaller steps to make the project feel less daunting. Instead of trying to write the entire essay in one sitting, set realistic and achievable goals, such as writing a certain number of words per session or completing a specific section by the end of the day.
To get started, you could divide your essay into five stages:
Understand the brief. What is the question you need to answer?
Research. Create a plan of what you need to find out and gather information, setting specific goals for each research mission.
Outline. Once you’ve identified your main points and supporting evidence, you can use these as a roadmap, ordering them to use as a starting point for your writing.
Draft. Focus on one section or paragraph at a time, writing freely without worrying about how it looks or sounds at this point.
Revise and edit. Go back to refine and revise your content, editing for clarity, injecting your style and checking grammar and punctuation.
If you struggle to stick to your plan, use time management techniques like Pomodoro, Eat the Frog and Timeblocking to encourage you to structure work and breaks better to maintain focus and productivity.
